
Angel of Independence
The Monument to Independence or Column of Independence known colloquially as El Ángel or El Ángel de la Independencia, is an honorary column found in Mexico City, in the roundabout located at the confluence of Paseo de la Reforma, Río Tiber and Florence. It was inaugurated in 1910 to commemorate the Centennial of the beginning of the Mexican war of independence by the then president of Mexico, Porfirio Díaz. In later years it became a mausoleum for the greatest heroes of that war. It is one of the most emblematic monuments of the city and is currently used as a cultural icon of Mexico City and a place of national celebrations and demonstrations.
